Appetite for facial skincare remains, beauty therapy students told
Appetite for facial skincare remains, beauty therapy students told Even though the economic downturn has affected spending, those interested in beauty therapy needn't fear, as facial skincare seems to be one area where ladies won't compromise.

Wendy Lewis, founder and editor in chief of international forum Beauty In The Bag, explained although some consumers have traded down, there are definite areas where the appetite for beauty treatments is alive and well.

"Sirtuins, topical stem cells and novel antioxidants are at the forefront of new developments in anti-ageing topicals; [the] lash enhancement category is also growing by leaps and bounds," she explained.

Ms Lewis said consumers are increasingly looking for what she called "treatment cosmetics", for example "foundations containing antioxidants and anti-ageing or anti-acne ingredients", as well as multi-purpose products which allow them to spend less time in front of the mirror.

The comments came after research from Mintel revealed while women have cut back in many areas of personal care because of the recession, they still want to invest in healthy skin.

Facial skincare was shown to be among the biggest categories in the big five European countries last year, achieving a market value of €6.2 billion (£3.84 billion).
