Ladies undertaking beauty courses may want to ensure they regularly cleanse their makeup tools, as failure to do so could lead to eye infections, rashes and breakouts.
This is according to dermatologist Dr Shirley Chi, who explained in an interview with KABC-TV Los Angeles how cosmetics are an easy way to spread bacteria.
Individuals were advised to store their makeup brushes in a drawer and to shampoo them every two weeks to remove grease and dirt.
Meanwhile, Dr Chi noted products such as lip gloss are breeding grounds for bacteria, as the applicator is constantly being pushed back into the container.
It was noted foundations, liquid liner, lip gloss and mascara need to be replaced every two to three months, although products with pumps and squeeze tubes can be kept longer.
Recent research by Debenhams revealed the average beauty user hoards items that are four years out of date.
