Students attending make up schoolhave been told that, before anything else is applied, foundation and concealer should be in place.
Daniel Thompson, creative director and cofounder of Daniel Thompson Beauty in Toronto, claimed that foundation provides a "blank canvas" for the face and getting it right will help the make up to shine.
He told the Vancouver Sun: "It catches light and it smooths the appearance of the texture of the skin so that when makeup goes on - eyeshadow, makeup, blush - everything looks harmonised."
It was recommended that tinted moisturiser can also be used as a basic layer, but should match the skin tone as much as possible in order to even out any blotches before make up can be applied.
Professional make up artist Brigitte Bigeard recently told Focus On Style that those thinking of undergoing make up training may want to brush up on their knowledge of foundation and how to use them on women of different ages.
