People on make-up artist courses have been cautioned that they should not use products that are too old and should be aware when it is time to throw away cosmetics.
Susmta Patel, a make-up artist who has consulted for Clinique, told Tulsaworld.com that many products are only designed to last for one or two years.
She pointed out that this is only a guideline though, as products can become contaminated at any stage as they are often used on areas that are prone to germs, such as the mouth and eyes.
Ms Patel also told those on beauty courses that they should try and remember when they opened an item and should get rid of any products that have altered in consistency or colour.
In addition, Dr Andrea Thau, a spokesperson for the American Optometric Association, told Today.msnbc.com that people are most likely to get an infection from items that are dark, damp or wet, as well as creams.
