Mature ladies should avoid applying too much heavy makeup as it can highlight problems areas in the skin.
This is according to makeup artist Peter Schmidinger, who explained in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald that it is important to use products that mimic skin pigment.
He claimed there are three steps to follow in order to achieve a face that looks "harmonious and impressive".
"Lighten the skin, apply blush and define the eyebrows," Mr Schmidinger advised ladies, adding that powder is the best way to cover age spots as cover sticks can leave the complexion looking uneven.
The area around the eye was noted as often being the first to show wrinkles, so should be brightened using concealer or a light-reflecting cream.
In a recent article for the Daily Makeover, writer Carmindy recommended using plenty of moisturiser to keep older skin hydrated and in a healthy condition before applying cosmetics.
