Most women only replace cosmetics and skincare when they run out, however long that takes, which is something that make up school students should advise against.
The survey by Debenhams also found that 72 per cent of respondents never washed their sponges or brushes, even though they should do so at least once a week.
This is no doubt something that make up school students do rigorously, since cosmetics, perfume and skincare products used after the expiration date can lead to irritation and infection.
In addition, 60 per cent of those surveyed admitted they shared cosmetics and skincare with friends and family, which increases the risk of infection.
"We wouldn't hesitate to chuck out mouldy or bacteria-ridden food and the same standards should apply to the lotions and potions and that we put on our skin," said Sara Stern, director of cosmetics at Debenhams.
Recent research from Mintel found that just one in four women admit to discarding their make up, shampoo and shower gel if they smell funny or become discoloured, another habit which make up school students should advise against.
