Spring time is here and it is not only the house that beauty school students should be clearing out - makeup bags should be overhauled every few months, according to an expert.
Annet King, director of global education at beauty brand Dermalogica, told Access Hollywood that certain products are at higher risk of harbouring bacteria, such as items that are put directly on lips or ones which require a finger for application.
She added: "If you keep your makeup in your bathroom which is a hot, humid and bacteria-laden environment, then this also lowers the products shelf life."
When beauty school students are shopping they can select items which are less likely to go off quickly, such as using tubes or pumps rather than tubs of skincare products. Another top tip is to not leave items in direct sunlight, as this will lead to them going off more rapidly.
The advice follows research from Debenhams, which stated that the average woman's makeup bag is four years out of date, as many Brit ladies use the items past their use-by date.
