Summer make up is usually about bright shades which offer a pop of colour to dreary days, but finding the right hues can be tricky.
Eyes present a particular issue. Too dark and they look like you're going on an evening out, too bright and they look like you've been rummaging through your teenage make up box.
The Guardian's resident beauty columnist Sali Hughes has now offered her top tips for the cosmetics products of this summer, something those on make up courses are likely to want to take note of.
For the eyes, Ms Hughes recommended Chanel Les 4 Ombres Quadra Eye Shadow Palette in Lilium, RMK Mix Colors For Eyes in EX-04 Green or Nars eye trio in Cap Ferrat, with all being priced below £40.
"Lovely lime and emerald with classic buff and slate. Grown-up, chic colours; perfect textures," she said of the Chanel palette, while the RMK product was said to be "great for novices".
And while bright eyes and lips might have been big on the catwalks this summer, its best to opt for a natural lip for every day wear, as worn to great effect by the likes of Kate Winslet and Anne Hathaway in recent months.
